Eye Care Center of Virginia was founded by Garth Stevens, Jr. MD over 25 years ago to serve the eye care needs of the greater Richmond Metro community.  He is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cataract, cornea, and glaucoma surgeries.

Dr. Stevens provides an eye care practice whose

 mission is to improve the quality of life of its patients by delivering eye care in an environment which emphasizes clinical expertise, innovative technology, compassion, kindness, and trust.


At ECCVA, you will find the use of advanced technology and state-of-the-art equipment to provide our patients with excellence in clinical care. As a pioneer in his field, Dr. Stevens continues to support growth and learning in ophthalmology through mentorships and residency programs.

Garth Stevens, Jr., M.D.

Dr. Steven’s is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in anterior segment eye surgery such as cataract, glaucoma and cornea procedures. He is well known in Richmond and throughout Virginia for his work with corneal transplantation. In 2001, Dr. Stevens was the first in Virginia to perform an innovative type of corneal transplantation – replacing just the back layer rather than the entire cornea. Later, he was the first to perform DSEK, DMEK, and DWEK cornea surgery in Virginia.

George E. Sanborn, M.D., Phd.

Dr. Sanborn is a board-certified ophthalmologist, specializing in medical retina. He has authored and/or co-authored  dozens of scientific articles.  He has co-authored with Joseph W.A. Whitehome the book The Civil War in West Virginia: Political Origins and Military Strife in a Divided Region. With over 50 years of experience in his field, Dr. Sanborn has served on the full-time faculty of two university medical centers and is currently a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Retina Society of Virginia and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Sanborn enjoys playing golf, traveling, and gardening. He is fluent in French.

David Alan Chandler, M.D.

Dr. Chandler (often known as Dr. Alan Chandler) is a board-certified ophthalmologist located in the Medical Office Building 2 at Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mecanicsville. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cataract, glaucoma, dry eye, and diabetic eye disorders and has over 30 years of clinical experience. He earned his medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine (UVA) and completed his medical training in ophthalmology at the Washington Hospital Center. Born and raised in Virginia, Dr. Chandler actively participates in local charity programs to provide eye care to our community in need.

Dr. St. Clair Reeves La Roche, O.D.

Dr. La Roche (often known as Dr. Reeves La Roche) graduated as a Pre-Med/Spanish major in 2009 from Tulane University in New Orleans, later earning an optometry degree  at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 2014.  For over 12 years he has been an optometrist in Farmville, VA, where he has continued the family ophthalmology tradition alongside his father. Dr. La Roche is board-certified in Optometry, demonstrating advanced clinical competency, continued education, and expertise. 

He is fluent in Spanish and active in the community and volunteer services. Recently he formed part of a medical team serving indigent patients in Louisiana and Tennessee. He currently practices part-time at the Southside Chesterfield Location.

Dr. Stevens is a surgical and clinical professor. Throughout his medical career he has trained corneal and refractive ophthalmology fellows, eye surgery residents, and family practice residents. Currently, Dr. Stevens and his staff provide training for the following:

   *Training for family practice residents in diagnosing and     treating eye diseases and conditions

   *Optometry senior student training in the comprehensive     clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of eye diseases     and pathology

   *Fellowships in ophthalmology for Certified Physician Assistants

Dr. Stevens is a skilled surgeon and clinical professor. He has trained throughout his medical career:

  • Family Practice Residents

Currently, Dr. Stevens and his Staff provide at EYE CARE CENTER OF VIRGINIA.

  • Specialty surgical training for Ophthalmologists Fellows in Cornea and Refractive Surgery
  • Training for Family Practice Residents in Eye Diseases
  • Optometry Senior Student training for 3 months Rotation in the comprehensive clinical assessment of diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases
  • Fellowships in Ophthalmology for Physician Assistants
